He was a railway See also:expert, becoming secretary-See also:general of the See also:Rail-way See also:Commission established in 1842, See also:government See also:commissioner to the authorized railway companies, See also:administrator of the See also:Lyons-Mediterranean railway, and commissioner to examine See also:foreign See also:railways. In 1846 he was returned to the Chamber of Deputies for See also:Herault, but the revolution of 1848 drove him into private See also:life, from which he only emerged after the down-fall of the See also:Empire, when in See also:February 1871 he was returned to the See also:National See also:Assembly. He supported the government of See also:Thiers and was See also:minister of See also:agriculture and See also:commerce in 1872-73. He sat in the See also:Left Centre, and steadily supported republican principles. He entered the See also:Senate in 1876, and was minister of agriculture in the See also:Dufaure-See also:Ricard See also:cabinet of that See also:year, retaining his See also:portfolio in the Jules See also:Simon See also:ministry which See also:fell on the 16th of May 1877. In 1878, when he joined the new Dufaure cabinet, he opened the See also:Paris See also:exhibition of agriculture and manufactures, the See also:original See also:suggestion of which had been made by him during his 1876 ministry. In 1879 he was sent as See also:ambassador to See also:Vienna, whence he was next year recalled on the See also:score of See also:health. Two years later he re-entered the Senate, where he did See also:good service to the cause of " Republican See also:Defence " during the Boulangist agitation.
