It lies near the See also:river See also:Don, in a See also:low, See also:flat See also:district, which was formerly a marshy See also:waste, resembling the See also:fens of the eastern counties. See also:Hatfield See also:Chase, a portion of this See also:tract See also:south of Thorne, was partly drained by the Dutch engineer Vermuyden in the 17th See also:century, and there were in the district numerous Dutch settlers. The Chase is generally considered to have been the See also:scene of the See also:battle of See also:Heathfield in 633, when See also:King See also:Edwin of See also:Northumbria See also:fell before the See also:heathen King Penla of See also:Mercia. The Levels, as this district is generally named, are of remarkable fertility, and Thorne, having See also:water communication with See also:Goole and the See also:Humber, is consequently an agricultural centre of importance; while some See also:barge-See also:building and a See also:trade in See also:peat fibre are also carried on.
