TURLOUGH LUINEACH O'See also:NEILL (C. 1530-1595), See also:earl of Clanconnell, was inaugurated See also:chief of See also:Tyrone on See also:Shane's See also:death. Making professions of See also:loyalty to the See also:queen of See also:England, he sought to strengthen his position by See also:alliance with the O'Donnells, MacDonnells and MacQuillans. But his conduct giving rise to suspicions, an expedition under the earl of See also:Essex was sent against him, which met with such doubtful success that in 1575 a treaty was arranged by which O'Neill received extensive grants of lands and permission to employ three See also:hundred Scottish mercenaries. In 1578 he was created See also:baron of See also:Clogher and earl of Clanconnell for See also:life; but on the outbreak of See also:rebellion in See also:Munster his attitude again became menacing, and for the next few years he continued to intrigue against the See also:English authorities. After several years of rivalry and much fighting between the two relatives, Turlough resigned the headship of the See also:clan in favour of Hugh, who was inaugurated O'Neill in 1593.
