UGLICH , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Yaroslavl, on the upper See also:Volga, 63 m. W. by S. of the. See also:city of Yaroslavl. Pop., 9698. Its See also:historical remains are mostly associated with See also:Prince Dmitri, son of See also:Ivan the Terrible, who was believed to have been murdered (1591) here by Boris Godunov. The wooden See also:house (built in 1481, restored in 1892) which the prince occupied, a See also:church of St See also:Demetrius, erected at the spot where he was killed,563 and a kiosk on the site of a See also:convent where his See also:mother was forcibly consecrated a See also:nun, are the See also:principal memorials of this incident. The See also:cathedral was erected in the 13th See also:century, but subsequently restored, and contains the See also:grave of Prince See also:Roman. The See also:industries include See also:paper-See also:mills, See also:flour-mills, distilleries, See also:copper See also:works, and See also:linen factories; and the samovars (See also:tea-urns) and sausages made here are famous. The See also:local See also:annals go as far back as the 9th century. Until the 14th century Uglich was a See also:separate principality, which extended over eastern See also:Tver. In 1329 the sons of Prince Roman the See also:Saint renounced their See also:independence in favour of See also:Moscow, and fifty years later the Uglich princes sold their rights to the See also:great prince of Moscow. The See also:Tatars plundered the town in 1237, 1293 and 1408, and the See also:Lithuanians did the same at a later date.
