YAROSLAVL , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, See also:capital of the See also:government of the same name, on the right See also:bank of the See also:Volga, at its confluence with the Kotorost, 174 M. by See also:rail N.E. of See also:Moscow. Pop. about 70,000. Yaroslavl is an archiepiscopal see. The Uspenskiy See also:cathedral was begun in 1215 and rebuilt in 1646–48; the churches of the Preobrazhenskiy monastery, St See also:John's and Voskreseniye date from the 15th and 17th centuries. Yaroslavl has a See also:lyceum, founded (1803) by a wealthy member of the See also:Demidov See also:family. The manufactories include See also:cotton-See also:mills, See also:flour-mills, See also:tobacco and See also:linen factories. The town was founded in 1026–36. It became the See also:chief town of a principality in 1218 and remained so until 1471, when it See also:fell under the dominion of Moscow.
