VOLOGDA , a See also:town of See also:Russia, See also:capital of the See also:government of the same name, situated in its See also:south-western corner on the See also:river Vologda, above its confluence with the navigable Sukhona, 127 M. by See also:rail N. of See also:Yaroslavl. Pop. (1881) 17,025; (1897) 27,822. It is an old town, having many See also:ancient churches, including one which See also:dates from the 12th See also:century, and the See also:cathedral, founded in 1568. Vologda is a considerable commercial centre—See also:flax, See also:linseed, oats, See also:hemp, See also:butter and eggsbeing exported to both St See also:Petersburg and See also:Archangel. It has distilleries, tanneries, and oil, See also:soap, See also:tobacco, See also:candle and See also:fur-dressing See also:works. Vologda existed as a trading town as See also:early as the z 2th century. It was a See also:colony of See also:Novgorod, and was founded in 1147, and carried on a brisk See also:trade in flax, See also:tallow, furs, See also:corn, See also:leather and manufactured goods. In 1273 it was plundered by the See also:prince of See also:Tver in See also:alliance with the See also:Tatars, but soon recovered. See also:Moscow disputed its See also:possession with Novgorod until the 15th century; the Moscow princes intrigued to find support amidst the poorer inhabitants against the richer Novgorod merchants, and four successive times Vologda had to fight against its See also:metropolis. It was definitely annexed to Moscow in 1447. When Archangel was founded, and opened for See also:foreign trade in 1553, Vologda became the See also:chief See also:depot for goods exported through that channel. See also:Polish bands plundered it in 1613, and the See also:plague of 1648 devastated it; but it maintained its commercial importance until the See also:foundation of St Petersburg, when See also:Russian foreign trade took another channel.
