city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Ware county, See also:Georgia, U.S.A., about 96 m. S.W. of See also:Savannah and about 6o m. W. of See also:Brunswick. Pop. (188o) 628; (189o) 3364; (1900) 5919 (2899 negroes) ; (1910) 14,485. Waycross is served by the See also:Atlanta, See also:Birmingham & See also:Atlantic, and the Atlantic See also:Coast See also:Line See also:railways, several branches of the latter intersecting here. In the city is the See also:Bunn-See also:Bell See also:Institute (Baptist, opened in 1909). There are large railway See also:car construction and repair shops here, and Way-See also:cross is a commercial centre for the See also:forest products (See also:naval stores and See also:lumber) and the See also:cotton, See also:sugar See also:cane, sweet potatoes, melons and See also:pears of the surrounding See also:country. The See also:municipality owns the See also:water-See also:works, the water-See also:supply being obtained from artesian See also:wells. Before the passage of the See also:state See also:prohibition See also:law Waycross secured virtual prohibition of the See also:sale of intoxicating liquors by requiring a large liquor license See also:fee ($20,000 in 1883, increased to $30,000 in 1892). Waycross was settled in 1870, was first incorporated in 1894 and became a city in 1909.
