WESTBROOK , a See also:

city of See also:Cumberland See also:county, See also:Maine, U.S.A., on the Presumpscot See also:river, 5 M. N.W. of See also:Portland. Pop. (189o) 6632, (1900) 7283 (1693 See also:foreign-See also:born), (1910) 8281. It is served by the Maine Central and the See also:Boston & Maine See also:railways. In Westbrook are the See also:Walker Memorial Library (1894) and the See also:Warren Library (1879). The river provides See also:water-See also:power, and among the manufactures are See also:paper, silks, See also:cotton goods, &c. In 1814 Westbrook was separated from See also:Falmouth and incorporated as a township under the name of Stroudwater, and in 1815 the See also:present name was adopted in See also:honour of See also:Colonel See also:Thomas See also:West-See also:brook, who had distinguished himself in See also:wars with the See also:Indians. In 1871 Deering, now a See also:part of Portland, was taken from the township. A city See also:charter was granted to Westbrook in 1889 and adopted in 1891.
