FRANCIS See also:VAN (1572-1641), a celebrated diplomatist and statesman of the See also:United Provinces. His talents commended him to the See also:notice of See also:Advocate Johan van See also:Oldenbarneveldt, who sent him, at the See also:age 'of 26 years, as a See also:diplomatic See also:agent of the states-See also:general to the See also:court of See also:France. He took a considerable See also:part in the negotiations of the twelve years' truce in 16o6. His conduct of affairs having displeased the See also:French See also:king, he was recalled from his See also:post by Oldenbarneveldt in 1616. Such was the hatred he henceforth conceived against his former benefactor, that he did his very utmost to effect his ruin. He was one of the packed court of See also:judges who in 1619 condemned the aged statesman to See also:death. For his See also:share in this judicial See also:murder a deep stain rests on the memory of Aarssens. He afterwards be-came the confidential counsellor of See also:Maurice, See also:prince of See also:Orange, and afterwards of See also:Frederick See also:Henry, prince of Orange, in their conduct of the See also:foreign affairs of the See also:republic. He was sent on See also:special embassies to See also:Venice, See also:Germany and See also:England, and displayed so much diplomatic skill and finesse that See also:Richelieu ranked him among the three greatest politicians of his See also:time.
