His See also:early years were passed in See also:Calabria and at See also:Rome, where he finally settled as teacher of Greek at the Greek See also:college, at the same See also:time devoting himself to the study of See also:classics and See also:theology. In 1622, after the See also:capture of See also:Heidelberg by See also:Tilly, the elector See also:Maximilian of See also:Bavaria presented its splendid library composed of 196 cases of See also:MSS. (bibliotheca Palatina) to See also:Pope See also:Gregory XV. Allacci was sent to superintend its removal to Rome, where it was incorporated with the Vatican library. On the See also:death of Gregory, Allacci became librarian to See also:Cardinal Berberini, and subsequently (1661) librarian of the Vatican, which See also:post he held till his death on the 18th (or 19th) of See also:January 1669. It is noteworthy that, although a Greek by See also:birth, he became an ardent See also:Roman See also:Catholic and the See also:bitter enemy of all heretics, including his own countrymen. Allacci was a very industrious and voluminous writer, but his See also:works, although they See also:bear ample testimony to his immense learning, show an See also:absence of the true See also:critical See also:faculty, and are full of intolerance, especially on religious subjects. The number of his unpublished writings is also very large; the See also:

majority of them are included in the MSS. of the Vallicellian library.
