ASSEN , the See also:

capital of the See also:province of See also:Drente, See also:Holland, x6 m. by See also:rail S. of See also:Groningen, at the junction of the two canals which run See also:north and See also:south to Groningen and See also:Meppel respectively. Pop. (1900) 11,329. It is partly surrounded by a small See also:forest belonging to the See also:state. Assen possesses See also:schools (a gymnasium and burgher school), a chamber of See also:commerce, a museum of antiquities and a See also:court-See also:house. See also:Peat-cutting forms a considerable See also:industry. Many prehistoric remains found in the neighbourhood are in the museum at See also:Leiden. Until the 19th See also:century Assen was a small See also:place built See also:round the See also:convent in which See also:Otto II. (of See also:Lippe), See also:bishop of See also:Utrecht, was murdered after being taken prisoner at Koevorden in 1237.
