BANDON, or BANDONBRIDGE , a See also:market-See also:town of See also:county See also:Cork, See also:Ireland, in the See also:south-See also:east See also:parliamentary See also:division, picturesquely situated in a broad open valley on both sides of the See also:river Bandon. Pop. (1901) 2830. It iS 20 M. S.W. of the See also:city of Cork by the Cork, Bandon & South See also:Coast railway. It is an important agricultural centre and there are distilleries, breweries and See also:flour-See also:mills. The open See also:park of See also:Castle See also:Bernard (See also:earl of Bandon), on the See also:riverside, is attractive, and 2 M. below Bandon on the river is Innishannon, the See also:head of See also:navigation. Bandon was founded See also:early in the 17th See also:century by See also:Richard See also:Boyle, earl of Cork, and was incorporated by See also:James I. It returned two members to the Irish See also:parliament and thereafter one to the Imperial parliament until 1885. After the destruction of the walls by the Irish in 1689, Bandon See also:long resisted the See also:admission of See also:Catholic inhabitants.
