BOYLE , a See also:market See also:town of Co. See also:Roscommon, See also:Ireland, in the See also:north See also:parliamentary See also:division, on the See also:Sligo See also:line of the Midland See also:Great Western railway, 1o64 m. N.W. by W. from See also:Dublin and 28 m. S. by E. from Sligo. Pop. (1901) 2477. It is beautifully situated on both See also:banks of the See also:river Boyle, an affluent of the See also:Shannon, between Loughs Gara and See also:Key. Three See also:bridges connect the two parts of the town. There is considerable See also:trade in agricul' tural produce. To the north of the town stand the extensive ruins of a Cistercian See also:abbey founded in 1161, including remains of a cruciform See also:- CHURCH

The offices of the monastery are well preserved, and an interesting feature is seen in the names carved on the See also:door of the See also:lodge, attributed in See also:Cromwell's soldier, who occupied the buildings. Neighbouring antiquities are Asselyn church near Lough Key, and a large cromlech by the road towards Lough Gara.
