He graduated at Harvard See also:College in 1871 and at the Harvard See also:Law School in 1875; was admitted to the See also:Suffolk (Massachusetts) See also:bar in 1876; and in 1876–1879 was instructor in American See also:history at Harvard. He was a member of the Massachusetts See also:House of Representatives in 188o–1881, and of the See also:National House of Representatives in 1887–1893; succeeded Henry L. See also:Dawes as See also:United States Senator from Massachusetts in 1893; and in 1899 and in 1905 was re-elected to the See also:Senate, where he became one of the most prominent of the Republican leaders, and an influential supporter of See also:President See also:Roosevelt. He was a member of the Alaskan Boundary See also:Commission of 1903, and of the United States See also:Immigration Commission of 1907. In the National Republican See also:Convention of 1896 his See also:influence did much to secure the See also:adoption of the See also:gold See also:standard " See also:plank " of the party's See also:platform. He was the permanent chairman of the National Republican Convention of 1900, and of that of 1908. In 1874–1876 he edited the See also:North American See also:Review with Henry See also:Adams; and in 1879–1882, with See also:John T. See also:Morse, Jr., he edited the See also:International Review. In 1884-1890 he was an overseer of Harvard College. His doctoral thesis at Harvard was published with essays by Henry Adams, J. L.
