BENEDICT XI . (Niccolo Boccasini), See also:pope from 1303 to 1304, the son of a See also:notary, was See also:born in 1240 at Treviso. Entering the Dominican See also:order in 1254, he became See also:lector, See also:prior of the See also:convent, provincial of his order in See also:Lombardy, and in 1296 its See also:general. In 1298 he was created See also:cardinal See also:priest of See also:Santa Sabina, and in 1300 cardinal See also:bishop of See also:Ostia and See also:Velletri. In 1302 he was papal See also:legate in See also:Hungary. On the 22nd of See also:October 1303 he was unanimously elected pope. He did much to conciliate the enemies made by his predecessor See also:Boniface VIII., notably See also:France, the Colonnas and See also:King See also:Frederick II. of See also:Sicily; nevertheless on the 7th of See also:June 1304 he excommunicated See also:William of See also:Nogaret and all the Italians who had captured .Boniface in Anagni. Benedict died at See also:Perugia on the 7th of See also:July 1304; if he was really poisoned, as See also:report had it, suspicion would fall primarily on Nogaret. His successor See also:Clement V. transferred the papal See also:residence to See also:Avignon. Among Benedict's See also:works are commentaries on See also:part of the See also:Psalms and on the See also:Gospel of See also:Matthew. His See also:beatification took See also:place in 1733.
