In 1838 he made his first See also:journey to See also:Italy, and also published his first important articles Bemerkungen fiber schweizerische Kathedralen. In 1839 he went to the university of See also:Berlin, where he studied till 1843, spending See also:part of 1841 at See also:Bonn, where he was a See also:pupil of See also:Franz Kugler, the art historian, to whom his first See also:book, See also:Die Kunstwerke d. belgischen Stddte (1842), was dedicated. He was See also:professor of See also:history at the university of Basel (1845–1847, 1849–1855 and 1858–1893) and at the federal See also:polytechnic school at See also:Zurich (1855–1858). In 1847 he brought out new See also:editions of Kugler's two See also:great See also:works, Geschichte der Malerei and Kunstgeschichte, and in 1853 published his own See also:work, Die Zeil Constantins See also:des Grossen. He spent the greater part of the years 1853–1854 in Italy, where he collected the materials for one of his most famous works, Der See also:Cicerone: eine Anleitung zum Genuss der Kunstwerke Italiens, which was dedicated to Kugler and appeared in 1855 (7th See also:German edition, 1899; See also:English See also:translation of the sections See also:relating to paintings, by Mrs A. H. See also:Clough, See also:London, 1873). This work, which includes See also:sculpture and See also:architecture, as well as See also:painting, has become indispensable to the art traveller in Italy. About See also:half of the See also:original edition was devoted to the art of the See also:Renaissance, so that Burckhardt was naturally led on to the preparation of his two other celebrated works, Die Cultur der Renaissance in Italien (1860, 5th German edition 1896, and English translation, by S. G. C. Middlemore, in 2 vols., London, 1878), and the Geschichte der Renaissance in Italien (1867, 3rd German edition 1891). In 1867 he refused a professorship at See also:Tubingen, and in 1872 another (that See also:left vacant by See also:Ranke) at Berlin, remaining faithful to Basel. He died in 1897.
