BURGDORF (Fr. See also:Berthoud) , an See also:industrial See also:town in the Swiss See also:canton of See also:Bern. It is built on the See also:left See also:bank of the Emme and is 14 M. by See also:rail N.E. of Bern. The See also:lower (or See also:modern) town is connected by a curious See also:spiral See also:street with the upper (or old) town. The latter is picturesquely perched on a See also:hill, at a height of 1942 ft. above See also:sea-level (or 167 ft. above the See also:river); it is crowned by. the See also:ancient See also:castle and by the 15th-See also:century See also:parish See also:church, in the former of which See also:Pestalozzi set up his educational See also:establishment between 1798 and 1804. A large See also:trade is carried on at Burgdorf in the See also:cheese of the Emmenthal, while among the industrial establishments are railway See also:works, and factories of See also:cloth, See also:white See also:lead and tinfoil. In 1900 the See also:population was 8404, practically all Protestants and See also:German-speaking. A See also:fine view of the Bernese See also:Alps is obtained from the castle, while a still finer one may be enjoyed from the Lueg hill (2917 ft.), See also:north-See also:east of the town. The castle See also:dates from the days of the See also:dukes of Zaringen (11th-12th centuries), the last of whom (Berchtold V.) built walls See also:round the town at its See also:foot, and granted it a See also:charter of liberties. On the extinction (1218) of that See also:dynasty both castle and town passed to the See also:counts of Kyburg, and from them, with the See also:rest of their possessions, in 1272 by See also:marriage to the See also:cadet See also:line of the Habsburgs. By that line they were sold in 1384, with See also:Thun, to the town of Bern, whose bailiffs' ruled in the castle till 1798. (W.
