CAMPE, See also:JOACHIM HEINRICH (1746-1818) , See also:German educationist, was See also:born at Deensen in See also:Brunswick in 1746. He studied See also:theology at the university of See also:Halle, and after acting for some See also:time as See also:chaplain at See also:Potsdam, he accepted a See also:post as director of studies in the Philanthropin at See also:Dessau (see See also:BASEDOW). He soon after set up an educational See also:establishment of his own at Trittow, near See also:Hamburg, which he was obliged to give up to one of his assistants within a few years, in consequence of feeble See also:health. In 1787 he proceeded to Brunswick as counsellor of See also:education, and See also:purchased the Schulbuchhandlung, which under his direction became a most prosperous business. He died in 1818. His numerous educational See also:works were widely used throughout See also:Germany. Among the most popular were the Kleine Kinderbibliothek (11th ed., 18r5); See also:Robinson der Jiingere (59th ed., 186,), translated into See also:English and into nearly every See also:European See also:language; and SamritticheKinder- and Jugendschriften, 37 vols.
