CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA (anc. See also:

Stabiae) , a seaport and episcopal see of See also:Campania, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Naples, 17 M. S.E. by See also:rail from the See also:town of Naples. Pop. (1901) town, 26,378; See also:commune, 32,589. It lies in the See also:south-See also:east See also:angle of the See also:Bay of Naples, at the beginning of the See also:peninsula of See also:Sorrento, and owing to the See also:sea and See also:mineral See also:water See also:baths (12 different springs) and its attractive situation, with a splendid view of See also:Vesuvius and See also:fine See also:woods on the hills behind, it is a favourite resort of foreigners in See also:spring and autumn and of Neapolitans in summer. The See also:castle from which it takes its name, on the See also:hill to the south of the town, was built by the See also:emperor See also:Frederick II. There are three large churches of the See also:late 18th See also:century. There are a large royal dockyard and a small-arms factory;there are also See also:iron See also:works, See also:cotton, See also:flour and See also:macaroni See also:mills. The value of imports (chiefly See also:coal, See also:wheat, scrap-iron and See also:cheese) for 1904 was £1,239,048, and the value of exports (chiefly macaroni and See also:green See also:fruit) £769,100. There is also a sponge See also:trade, but the former See also:coral trade is depressed. The. See also:port was cleared by 420 vessels of 477,713 See also:tonnage in 1905.
