CAYENNE , a seaport and the See also:

capital of See also:French See also:Guiana, on the N.W. extremity of the See also:island of Cayenne, and near the mouth of the See also:river of that name, in 40 56' 28" N., and 52° 20' 36" W. Pop. about 12,6o0. The See also:town forms an almost perfect square, and has clean and well-macadamized streets. The houses, mostly of two storeys, are of See also:wood, strengthened on the first and ground floors by See also:brickwork. In the old town, which contains the See also:government-See also:house and See also:Jesuits' See also:College, the streets are not so regularly and_ well built as in the new. The See also:Place d'Armes, a See also:fine quadrangular space, lies between them. To the right of the See also:governor's house is See also:Mount Ceperon, on which stand Fort St See also:Michel, the marine See also:barracks, the See also:signal station and the lighthouse. Here, too, are the capacious reservoirs for the See also:water-See also:supply of the town, the source of which is a See also:lake to the See also:south of the island. The See also:harbour is shallow at its entrance, and See also:craft See also:drawing more than 14 ft. are obliged to See also:anchor 6 m. from the town. There is no See also:dock for the repair of vessels; but there are two quays at the town. The See also:principal exports of Cayenne are See also:gold, See also:cocoa, See also:phosphates, hides, See also:woods and spices. The imports are French wines, See also:spirits and See also:liqueurs; See also:silk and See also:cotton stuffs, See also:tobacco, hardware, See also:glass, earthenware, clothing, preserved See also:meat, See also:fish, and vegetables, See also:maize, See also:flour, See also:hay, See also:bran, See also:oils and See also:cattle.

The temperature of Cayenne is between 76° and 88° Fahr. throughout the See also:year; but the See also:heat is tempered by easterly winds. Between See also:December and See also:March a See also:north See also:wind blows, unfavourable to weak constitutions. Yellow and other fevers often attack the inhabitants of the town, but the See also:climate, though moist, is as a whole healthy.
