CHINGLEPUT, or CHENGALPAT , a See also:town and See also:district of B,iitish See also:India, in the See also:Madras See also:presidency. The town, situated 36 m. by See also:rail from Madras, had a See also:population in 1901 of 10,551. With Chandragiri in See also:North See also:Arcot, Chingleput was once the See also:capital of the See also:Vijayanagar See also:kings, after their overthrow by the Mussulmans at Talikota in 1565. In 1639 a See also:chief, subject to these kings, granted to the See also:East India See also:Company the See also:land on which Fort St See also:George now stands. The fort built by the Vijayanagar kings in the 16th See also:century was of strategic importance, owing to its swampy surroundings and the See also:lake that flanked its See also:side. It was taken by the See also:French in 1751, and was retaken in 1752 by See also:Clive, after which it proved invaluable to the See also:British, especially when See also:Lally in his advance on Madras See also:left it unreduced in his See also:rear. During the See also:wars of the British with Hyder See also:Ali it withstood his See also:power, and afforded a See also:refuge to the natives; and in 178o, after the defeat of See also:Colonel W. See also:Baillie, the See also:army of See also:Sir See also:Hector See also:Munro here found refuge. The town is noted for its manufacture of pottery, and carries on a See also:trade in See also:rice. The DISTRICT OF CHINGLEPUT surrounds the See also:city of Madras, stretching along the See also:coast for about 115 M. The administrative headquarters are at See also:Saidapet. See also:Area, 3079 sq. m.
