It rises in La Loche (or Methy) See also:lake, a small lake in 56° 30' N. and ao9° 30' W., at an See also:altitude of 1577 ft. above the See also:sea, and flows E.N.E. to See also:Hudson's See also:Bay, passing through a number of lake expansions. Its See also:principal tributaries are the See also:Beaver (350 M. See also:long), Sandy and See also:Reindeer See also:rivers. Between See also:Frog and Methy portages (480 m.) it formed See also:part of the old voyageur route to the See also:Peace, See also:Athabasca, and See also:Mackenzie. It is still navigated by canoes, but has many rapids. Its principal affluent, the Reindeer, discharges the See also:waters of Reindeer Lake (1150 ft. above the sea, with an See also:area of 2490 sq. m.) and See also:Wollaston Lake (altitude, 1300ft.). The Churchill is 925 M. long. Fort Churchill, at its mouth, is the best See also:harbour in the See also:southern portion of Hudson's Bay. The See also:portage of La Loche (or Methy), See also:Ili M. in length, connects its See also:head waters with the Clearwater river, a tributary of the Athabasca, draining into the See also:Arctic Ocean.
