WILLIAM (1770-1838) , the well-known explorer, was the youngest See also:brother of the foregoing. He was See also:born in See also:Caroline See also:county, See also:Virginia, on the 1st of See also:August 1770. At the See also:age of fourteen he removed with his parents to See also:Kentucky, settling .at the falls of the See also:Ohio (See also:Louisville). He entered the See also:United States See also:army as a See also:lieutenant of See also:infantry in See also:March 1792, and served under See also:General See also:Anthony See also:Wayne against the See also:Indians in 1794. In See also:July 1796 he resigned his See also:commission on See also:account of See also:ill-See also:health. In 18o3—18o6, with Meriwether See also:Lewis (q.v.), he commanded the famous exploring expedition across the See also:continent to the mouth of the See also:Columbia See also:river, and was commissioned second lieutenant in March 1804 and first lieutenant in See also:January 18o6. In See also:February he again resigned from the army. He then served for a few years as brigadier-general of the See also:Louisiana territorial See also:militia, as See also:Indian See also:agent for " Upper Louisiana," as territorial See also:governor of See also:Missouri in 1813—182o, and as See also:superintendent of Indian affairs at St See also:- LOUIS
