It has a considerable See also:shipping See also:trade, and manufactories of See also:tobacco and cigars, See also:chocolate, See also:margarine, oil, chemicals, brushes, See also:vinegar, See also:soap, See also:guano and See also:perfumery. There are also See also:iron foundries and See also:machine factories. The old See also:minster See also:church, built in the See also:middle of the 11th See also:century, contains some See also:fine See also:choir stalls. Emmerich, formerly called Embrika and Emrik, originally a See also:Roman See also:colony, is mentioned in records so See also:early as the 7th century. St See also:Willibrord founded a monastery and church here. In 1233 the See also:place came into the See also:possession of the See also:dukes of See also:Gelderland and received the status of a town in 1247. In 1371 it See also:fell to the duchy of Cleves, and passed with it in 1609 to See also:Brandenburg. The town joined the Hanseatic See also:League in 1407.

In 1794 it was bombarded by the See also:

French under See also:General See also:Vandamme, and in 18o6 it was assigned to the See also:grand-duchy of See also:Berg. It passed into the possession of See also:Prussia in 1815. See A. Dederich, Annalen der Stadt Emmerich (Emmerich, 1867).
