FLAGELLATA , the name given to the See also:

Protozoa whose dominant phase is a " flagellula," or See also:cell-See also:body provided with one, few or rarely many See also:long actively vibratile, cytoplasmic processes. See also:Nutrition is variable: (r) " Holozoic "; See also:food taken in by ingestion, by amoeboid See also:action either unspecialized or at one or more well-defined oral spots, or through an See also:aperture (mouth); (2) " Saprophytic " ; food taken in in See also:solution through the See also:general See also:surface of the body; (3) " Holophytic "; food-material formed in the coloured plasm by fixation of See also:carbon from the See also:medium, with liberation of See also:oxygen, in presence of See also:light, as in See also:green See also:plants. Fission in the " active " See also:state occurs and is usually See also:longitudinal. Multiple fission rarely occurs See also:save in a sporocyst, and produces microzoospores, which in some cases may conjugate with others as isogametes or with larger forms. (megagametes). " Hypnocysts " to See also:tide over unfavourable conditions are not infrequent, but have no necessary relation to See also:reproduction. Many have a See also:firm pellicle which may See also:form a hard See also:shell: again a distinct cell-See also:wall of chitin or See also:cellulose may be formed: finally, an open See also:cup, " theca," of firm or gelatinous material may be See also:present, with or without a stalk: such a cup and stalk are often found in colonial See also:species, and are subject to much the same conditions as in See also:Infusoria. The See also:nucleus is See also:simple in most cases; but in Haemoflagellates it is connected with a second nucleus, which again is in immediate relation with the motile apparatus; the former is termed the " trophonucleus," the latter the " kineto-nucleus." As reserves the See also:protoplasm may contain oil, See also:starch, paramylum, leucosin (a substance soluble in See also:water, and of doubtful See also:composition), proteid granules.
