village of See also:Northamptonshire, See also:England, picturesquely situated on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:river Nene, 1 z m. from See also:Elton station on the See also:Peterborough See also:branch of the See also:London & See also:North-Western railway. The See also:castle, of which nothing but the earthworks and See also:foundations remain, is famous as the See also:scene of the imprisonment of See also:Mary See also:queen of Scots from See also:September 1586 to her trial and See also:execution on the 8th of See also:February 1587. The earthworks, commanding a See also:ford of the river, are apparently of very See also:early date, and probably See also:bore a castle from See also:Norman times. It became an important stronghold of the Plantagenets from the See also:time of See also:Edward III., and was the birthplace of See also:Richard III. in 1452. The See also:church of St Mary and All See also:Saints, originally collegiate, is Perpendicular, and only the See also:nave with aisles, and the See also:tower surmounted by an octagon, remain; but the See also:building is in the best See also:style of its See also:period. Edward, second See also:duke of See also:York, who was killed at the See also:battle of See also:Agincourt in 1415, Richard, the third duke, and his duchess, See also:Cicely (d. 1495), also his son the See also:earl of See also:Rutland, who with Richard himself, See also:fell at the battle of See also:Wakefield in 146o, are buried in the church. Their monuments were erected by Queen See also:Elizabeth, who found the See also:choir and tombs in ruins.
