GAMBRINUS , a mythical Flemish See also:

king who is credited with the first See also:brewing of See also:beer. His name is usually derived from that of See also:Jan See also:Primus, i.e. Jan (See also:John) I., the victorious See also:duke of See also:Brabant, from 1261 to 1294, who was See also:president of the See also:Brussels gild of brewers; his portrait with a foaming See also:glass of See also:ale in his See also:hand had the See also:place of See also:honour in the gild-See also:hall, and this led in See also:time, it is suggested, to the myth of the beer-king who is usually represented outside a See also:barrel with a See also:tankard in his hand.
