GELNHAUSEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Hesse-See also:Nassau, on the Kinzig, 27 M. E.N.E. of See also:Frankfort-on-See also:Main, on the railway to Bebra. Pop. 4500. It is romantically situated on the slope of a See also:vine-clad See also:hill, and is still surrounded by See also:ancient walls and towers. On an See also:island in the See also:river are the See also:ivy-covered ruins of the imperial See also:palace which See also:Frederick I. (See also:Barbarossa) built before 1170, and which was destroyed by the Swedes during the See also:Thirty Years' See also:War. It has an interesting and beautiful See also:church (the Marien Kirche), with four See also:spires (of which that on the See also:transept is curiously crooked), built in the 13th See also:century, and restored in 1876–1879; also several other ancient buildings, notably the town-See also:hall, the Furstenhof (now administrative offices), and the Hexenthurm. See also:India-See also:rubber goods are manufactured, and See also:wine is made. Gelnhausen became an imperial town in 1169, and diets of the See also:Empire were frequently held within its walls. In 1634 and 1635 it suffered severely from the Swedes. In 1803 the town became the See also:property of Hesse-See also:Cassel, and in 1866 passed to See also:Prussia.
