He studied See also:art with the Dutch marine painter See also:Albert See also:van Beest, who had a studio in New See also:Bedford, and in 1864 he opened a studio for himself in See also:Boston, subsequently settling in New See also:York, where he was elected an See also:associate of the See also:National See also:Academy of See also:Design in 1867 and an academician in 1878. He was also a See also:charter member of the American See also:Water Color Society and the Society of American Artists. From 1878 until 1896 he was teacher of See also:painting and See also:chief See also:master of the Woman's Art School of See also:Cooper See also:Union, New York, and from 1896 until his See also:death he was director. Gifford painted longshore views, See also:sand See also:dunes and landscapes generally, with See also:charm and See also:poetry. He was an etcher of consider-able reputation, a member of the Society of American Etchers, and an honorary member of the Society of Painter-Etchers of See also:London. He died in New York on the 13th of See also:January 1905.
