GRAFTON , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Taylor county, See also:West See also:Virginia, U.S.A., on Tygart See also:river, about zoo m. by See also:rail S.E. of See also:Wheeling. Pop, (189o) 3159; (1900) 5650, including 226 See also:foreign-See also:born and 162 negroes; (1910) 7563. It is served by four divisions of the See also:Baltimore & See also:Ohio railway, which maintains extensive See also:car shops here. The city is about z000 ft. above See also:sea-level. It has a small See also:national See also:cemetery, and about 4 M. W., at Pruntytown, is the West Virginia Reform School. Grafton is situated near large See also:coal-See also:fields, and is supplied with natural See also:gas. Among its manufactures are See also:machine-See also:shop and foundry products, window gldss and pressed See also:glass See also:ware, and grist See also:mill and planing-mill products. The first See also:settlement was made about 1852, and Grafton was incorporated in 1856 and chartered as a city in 1898. In 1903 the See also:population and See also:area of the city were increased by the See also:annexation of the See also:town of Fetterman (pop. in woo, 796), of See also:Beaumont (unincorporated), and of other territory.
