II18), became count of Meulan or Mellent about Io80. Before this date, however, he had fought at See also:Hastings, and had added large estates in See also:Warwickshire to the Norman fiefs of Beaumont and See also:Pont Audemer, which he received when his See also:father entered the See also:abbey of St See also:Peter at Preaux. It was during the reigns of See also:William II. and See also:Henry I. that the count See also:rose to See also:eminence, and under the latter monarch he became " the first among the counsellors of the See also:king." A " strenuous and sagacious See also:man " he rendered valuable service to both See also:kings in their Norman See also:wars, and Henry I. was largely indebted to him for the English See also:crown. He obtained lands in See also:Leicestershire, and it has been said he was created See also:earl of See also:Leicester; this statement, however, is an See also:error, although he exercised some of the privileges of an earl. His abilities as a counsellor, statesman and diplomatist gained him the admiration of his contemporaries, and Henry of See also:Huntingdon describes him as " the wisest man between this and See also:Jerusalem." He seems to have been a man of See also:independent See also:character, for he assisted See also:Anselm against William See also:Rufus, although he supported Henry I. in his See also:quarrel with See also:Pope See also:Paschal II. When Robert died on the 5th of See also:June 1118 his lands appear to have been divided between his twin sons, Robert and Waleran, while a third son, See also:Hugh, became earl of See also:Bedford in 1138.
