HUNTINGDON , a See also:

borough and the See also:county-seat of Huntingdon county, See also:Pennsylvania, U.S.A., on the Juniata See also:river, about 150 1n. E. of See also:Pittsburg, in the S. central See also:part of the See also:state. Pop. (1890) 5729; (1900) 6053 (225 See also:foreign-See also:born); (191o) 6861. It is served by the Pennsylvania and the Huntingdon & Broad See also:Top See also:Mountain See also:railways, the latter See also:running to the Broad Top Mountain coalfields in the S.W. part of the county. The borough is built on ground sloping gently towards the river, which furnishes valuable See also:water See also:power. The surrounding See also:country is well adaptedto See also:agriculture, and abounds in See also:coal, See also:iron, See also:fire See also:clay, See also:limestone and See also:white See also:sand. Huntingdon's See also:principal manufactures are See also:stationery, See also:flour, See also:knitting-goods, See also:furniture, boilers, radiators and See also:sewer See also:pipe. It is the seat of Juniata See also:College (See also:German Baptist Brethren), opened in 1876 as the Brethren's Normal School and Collegiate See also:Institute, and rechartered as Juniata College in 1896, and of the State See also:Industrial Reformatory, opened in 1888. See also:Indians (probably Oneidas) settled near the site of Huntingdon, erected here a tall See also:pillar, known as " See also:Standing See also:Stone "; the See also:original was removed by the Indians, but another has been erected by the borough on the same spot. The See also:place was laid out as a See also:town in 1767 under the direction of Dr See also:William See also:Smith (1727-1803), at the See also:time See also:provost of the college of Pennsylvania (afterwards the university of Pennsylvania); and it was named in See also:honour of the countess of Huntingdon, who had contributed liberally toward the See also:maintenance of that institution. It was incorporated as a borough in 1796.
