With his See also:regiment he served in the " See also:Light See also:Division " of See also:Wellington's See also:army throughout the earlier See also:Peninsular See also:campaigns, and at See also:Ciudad Rodrigo (19th See also:Jan. 1812) he led one of the forlorn hopes and was severely wounded. For his gallant conduct on this occasion Wellington presented Gurwood with the See also:sword of the See also:French See also:governor of Ciudad Rodrigo. A little later, transferring to the 9th Light Dragoons, he was made See also:brigade-See also:major to the See also:Guards' See also:cavalry which had just arrived in the See also:Peninsula. In the latter See also:part of the See also:war he served as brigade-major to See also:Lambert's brigade of the See also:sixth See also:infantry division, and was See also:present at the various actions in which that division played a conspicuous part—the Nivelle, the Nive, Orthes and See also:Toulouse. At See also:Waterloo See also:Captain Gurwood was for the third See also:time severely wounded. In the first twelve years of the See also:peace he was promoted up to the grade of lieut.-See also:colonel, and in 1841 became See also:brevet-colonel. He was for many years the See also:duke of Wellington's private secretary, and was entrusted by him with the collection and editing of the Wellington Despatches, which occupied Gurwood from 1837 to the end of his See also:life. This See also:work is a See also:monument of industrious skill, and earned its author a See also:Civil See also:List See also:Pension of £200. But overwork and the effects of his wounds had broken his See also:health, and he committed See also:suicide on See also:Christmas See also:day 1845. He was a C.B. and See also:deputy-See also:lieutenant of the See also:Tower.
