HAINICHEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Saxony, 0n the Kleine Striegis, 15 M. N.E. of See also:Chemnitz, on the See also:rail-way to See also:Rosswein. Pop. (1905), 7752. It has two Evangelical churches, a See also:park, and commercial and technical See also:schools. Hainichen is a See also:place of considerable See also:industry. Its See also:chief manufacture is that of flannels, See also:baize, and similar fabrics; indeed it may be called the centre of this industry in Germany. The See also:special whiteness and excellence of the See also:flannel made in Hainichen are due to the See also:peculiar nature of the See also:water used in the manufacture. There are also large dye-See also:works and See also:bleaching establishments. Hainichen is the birthplace of See also:Gellert, to whose memory a See also:bronze statue was erected in the See also:market-place in 1865. The Gellert institution for the poor was erected in 1815. See also:HAI-PHONG, a seaport of See also:Tongking, See also:French Indo-See also:China, on the Cua-See also:Cam, a See also:branch of the See also:Song-koi (Red See also:river) See also:delta.

population See also:numbers between 21,000 and 22,000, of whom 12,500 are Annamese, 7500 See also:Chinese (attracted by the See also:rice See also:trade of the See also:port) and 1200 Europeans. It is situated about 20 M. from the Gulf of Tongking and 58 m. E. by S. of See also:Hanoi, with which it communicates by river and See also:canal and by railway. It is the second commercial port of French Indo-China, is a See also:naval station, and has See also:government and private See also:ship-See also:building yards. The See also:harbour is accessible at all times to vessels See also:drawing 19 to 20 ft., but is obstructed by a See also:bar. Hai-phong is the seat of a See also:resident who performs the functions of See also:mayor, and the residency is the chief building of the town. A See also:civil tribunal, a tribunal of See also:commerce and a branch of the See also:Bank of Indo-China are also among its institutions. It is the headquarters of the river steamboat service (Messageries fluviales) of Tongking, which plies as far as Lao-See also:kay on the Song-koi, to the other chief towns of Tongking and See also:northern See also:Annam, and also to Hong-See also:kong. See also:Cotton-See also:spinning and the manufacture of See also:cement are carried on.
