He became sous-prefet of See also:Nerac in 1830, and advanced rapidly in the See also:civil service until in 1853 he was chosen by See also:Persigny See also:prefect of the See also:Seine in See also:succession to See also:Jean Jacques Berger, who hesitated to incur the vast expenses of the imperial schemesfor the embellishment of Paris. Haussmann laid out the Bois de See also:Boulogne, and made extensive improvements in the smaller parks. The gardens of the Luxembourg See also:Palace were cut down to allow of the formation of new streets, and the See also:Boulevard de Sebastopol, the See also:southern See also:half of which is now the Boulevard St See also:Michel, was driven through a populous See also:district. A new See also:water See also:supply, a gigantic See also:system of sewers, new See also:bridges, the See also:opera, and other public buildings, the inclusion of outlying districts—these were among the new prefect's achievements, accomplished by the aid of a bold handling of the public funds which called forth Jules See also:Ferry's See also:indictment, See also:Les Crimples fantastiques de Haussmann, in 1867. A See also:loan of 250 million francs was sanctioned for the city of Paris in 1865, and another of 26o million in 1869. These sums represented only See also:part of his See also:financial schemes, which led to his dismissal by the See also:government of Emile 011ivier. After the fall of the See also:Empire he spent about a See also:year abroad, but he re-entered public See also:life in 1877, when he became Bonapartist See also:deputy for See also:Ajaccio. He died in Paris on the 11th of See also:January 1891. Haussmann had been made senator in 1857, member of the See also:Academy of See also:Fine Arts in 1867, and See also:grand See also:cross of the See also:Legion of See also:Honour in 1862. His name is preserved in the Boulevard Haussmann.
