town of See also:south-western See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of See also:Lot-et-See also:Garonne, 16 m. W.S.W. of See also:Agen by road. Pop. (Igo6) town, 4018; See also:commune, 6318. The town, once the capital of the See also:dukes of See also:Albret, is divided by the Baise into two parts, See also:Grand-Nerac on the See also:left See also:bank and See also:Petit-Nerac on the right bank. The See also:river is spanned by a See also:bridge of the 16th See also:century, called the See also:Pont Vieux, and by the Pont Neuf, of See also:modern construction. Narrow winding streets often bordered by old houses ascend from the narrow quays on both See also:banks. From the left bank a See also:staircase leads to the See also:Rue See also:Henri Quatre, where stands a wing of the See also:castle in which See also:Henry IV. lived. A statue of the See also:king stands in one of the squares. The former See also:palace of the Chambre See also:des Comptes is now occupied by the tribunal of See also:commerce, the library and the museum. The See also:church of Grand-Nerac of the 18th century and the church of Petit-Nerac of the 19th century offer no remarkable features. On the left bank of the Baise, above Grand-Nerac, See also:market gardens have taken the See also:place of the old gardens of the Sires d'Albret, but remains of the Palais des Mariannes and of the See also:Pavilion des Bains du Roi de See also:Navarre, both of See also:Renaissance See also:architecture, are left.

The famous See also:

promenade of La Garenne laid out by See also:Antoine de See also:Bourbon, king of Navarre, stretches for more than a mile along the opposite bank of the river. The remains of a See also:Roman See also:villa, including a fragment of See also:mosaic, have been found there. A road leads from the south end of La Garenne to the ruins of the feudal castle of See also:Nazareth. The See also:Chateau du Tasta of the 15th century is within a See also:short distance of Nerac. The town has a sub-prefecture, and the See also:industries include See also:brewing and See also:cork-working. Nerac appears at the beginning of the rlth century as a See also:possession of the monks of St See also:Pierre de See also:Condom. The lords of Albret gradually deprived them of their authority over the town, and at the beginning of the 14th century founded a castle on the left bank of the Baise. In the 16th century the castle was the See also:residence of Henry IV. during much of his youth and of in 1851, of See also:Chita, the See also:present capital of See also:Transbaikalia, See also:Nerchinsk has been falling into decay.
