HAUSSER, See also:LUDWIG (1818–1867) , See also:German historian, was See also:born at Kleeburg, in See also:Alsace. Studying See also:philology at See also:Heidelberg in 1835, he was led by F. C. See also:Schlosser to give it up for See also:history, and after continuing his See also:historical See also:work at See also:Jena and teaching in the gymnasium at Wertheim he made his See also:mark by his See also:Die teutschen Geschichtssdzreiber vom Anfang See also:des Frankenreichs bis auf die See also:Hohenstaufen (1839). Next See also:year appeared his See also:Sage von Tell. After a See also:short See also:period of study in See also:Paris on the See also:French Revolution, he spent some See also:time working in the archives of See also:Baden and See also:Bavaria, and published in 1845 Die Geschichte der rheinischen Pfalz, which won for him a professorship extraordinarius at Heidelberg. In 185o he became See also:professor ordinarius. Hausser also interested himself in politics while at Heidelberg, See also:publishing in 1846 See also:Schleswig-See also:Holstein, Danmark and Deutschland, and editing with See also:Gervinus the Deutsche Zeitung. In 1848 he was elected to the See also:lower legislative chamber of Baden, and in 185o advocated the project of See also:union with See also:Prussia at the See also:parliament held at See also:Erfurt. Another timely work was his edition of See also:Friedrich See also:List's Gesammelte Schriften (1850), accompanied with a See also:life of the author. His greatest achievement, and the one on which his fame as an historian rests, is his Deutsche Geschichte vom Tode Friedrichs des Grossen bis zur Griindung des deutschen Bundes (See also:Leipzig, 1854–1857, 4 vols.). This was the first work covering that period based on a scientific study of the archival See also:sources.

In 1859 he again took See also:

part in politics, resuming his See also:place in the lower chamber, opposing in 1863 the project of See also:Austria for the reform of the See also:Confederation brought forward in the See also:assembly of princes at See also:Frankfort, in his See also:book Die Reform des deutschen Bundestages, and becoming one of the leaders of the " little German " (kleindeutsche) party, which advocated the exclusion of Austria from See also:Germany. In addition to various essays (in his Gesammelte Schriften, See also:Berlin, 1869-1870, 2 vols.), Hausser's lectures have been edited by W. Oncken in the Geschichte des Zeitalters der See also:Reformation (1869, 2nd ed. 1880), and Geschichte der franzosisclzen Revolution (1869, 2nd ed. 1870). These lectures reveal all the See also:charm of See also:style and directness of presentation which made Hausser's work as a professor so vital. See \V. See also:Wattenbach, Lud.
