JAMES (1786–1857) , known as the " See also:Blind Traveller," was See also:born at See also:Exeter on the 15th of See also:October 1786. He entered the See also:British See also:navy in 1798 as first-class volunteer, and was appointed See also:lieutenant in See also:April 1807. In 1810 he was invalided by an illness which resulted in See also:total loss of sight. In See also:consideration of his helpless circumstances he was in 1812 appointed one of the royal knights of See also:Windsor, but the quietness of such a See also:life harmonized so See also:ill with his active habits and keen interests that he requested leave of See also:absence to go abroad, and in 1819, 1820 and 1821 journeyed through See also:France, See also:Italy, See also:Switzerland, the parts of See also:Germany bordering on the See also:Rhine, See also:Belgium and the See also:Netherlands. On his return he published The Narrative of a See also:Journey through France, &c. (See also:London, 1822). He again set out in 1822 with the See also:design of making the See also:circuit of the See also:world, but after travelling through See also:Russia into See also:Siberia, he was suspected of being a See also:spy, was arrested when he had managed to penetrate loon m. beyond See also:Smolensk, and after being conducted to the frontiers of See also:Poland, returned See also:home by See also:Austria, See also:Saxony, See also:Prussia and See also:Hanover. He now issued Travels through Russia, Siberia, &c. (London, 1825). Shortly afterwards he again set out to accomplish by a somewhat different method the design which had been frustrated by the See also:Russian authorities; and an See also:account of his remarkable achievement was published in four volumes in 1834–1835, under the See also:title of A Voyage See also:round the. World, including Travels in See also:Africa, See also:Asia, See also:Australasia, See also:America, &c., from 1827 to 1832. His last journeys were through See also:Spain, See also:Portugal, See also:Moldavia, See also:Montenegro, See also:Syria and See also:Turkey; and he was engaged in preparing an account of this tour when he died in London on the 29th of See also:July 1857.
