His reign is chiefly marked by the aggressions of the See also:rival emperor of See also:Nicaea, John Vatatzes, who laid See also:siege to Thessalonica in 1243 and only withdrew upon John Angelus consenting to See also:exchange the See also:title " emperor " for the subordinate one of "See also:despot."
