ANGELUS , a See also:

Roman See also:Catholic devotion in memory of the See also:Annunciation. It has its name from the opening words, Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae. It consists of three texts describing the See also:mystery, recited as versicle and response alternately with the salutation " See also:Hail, See also:Mary! " This devotion is recited in the Catholic See also:Church three times daily, about 6 A.M., See also:noon and 6 p.m. At these See also:hours a See also:bell known as the Angelus bell is See also:rung. This is still rung in some See also:English See also:country churches, and has often been mistaken for and alleged to be a survival of the See also:curfew-bell. The institution of the Angelus is by some ascribed to See also:Pope See also:Urban II., by some to See also:John XXII. The triple recitation is ascribed to See also:Louis XI. of See also:France, who in 1472 ordered it to be thrice said daily.
