The district contains many flourishing villages, and consists of an elevated See also:plateau 6o m. by 10 to 15, highly cultivated by a skilful See also:system of drainage and See also:irrigation, producing fertile meadows, gardens and See also:fields yielding See also:rich crops of See also:wheat and See also:barley, See also:cotton, See also:rice and many kinds of See also:fruit. In the See also:northern See also:part and bounding on Maku lies the See also:plain of Chaldaran (Kalderan), where in See also:August 1514 the See also:Turks under See also:Sultan See also:Selim I. fought the Persians under Shah See also:Ismail and gained a See also:great victory.
The town of KHOI lies in 38° 37' N., 45° 15' E., 77 M. (90 by road) N.W. of See also:Tabriz, at an See also:elevation of 3300 ft., on the great See also:trade route between See also:Trebizond and Tabriz, and about 2 M. from the See also:left See also:bank of the Kotur Chai (river from Kotur) which is crossed there by a seven-arched See also:bridge and is known See also:lower down as the Kizil Chai, which flows into the Aras. The walled part of the town is a See also:quadrilateral with faces of about 1200 yds. in length and fortifications consisting of two lines of bastions, ditches, &c., much out of repair. The See also:population See also:numbers about 35,000, a third living inside the walls. The Armenian See also:quarter, with about Soo families and an old See also: 1828) was held for some See also:time by a See also:garrison of 3000 See also:Russian troops as a See also:guarantee for the See also:payment of the See also:war See also:indemnity.
