KOLAR , a See also:

town and See also:district of See also:India, hi the See also:state of See also:Mysore. The town is 43 M. E. of See also:Bangalore. Pop. (Igor), 12,210. Although of See also:ancient See also:foundation, it has been almost completely modernized. See also:Industries include the See also:weaving of blankets and the breeding of turkeys for export. The DISTRICT OF KOLAR has an See also:area of 318o sq. m. It occupies the portion of the Mysore table-See also:land immediately bordering the Eastern See also:Ghats. The See also:principal See also:watershed lies in the See also:north - See also:west, around the See also:hill of See also:Nandidrug (4810 ft.), from which See also:rivers radiate in all directions; and the whole See also:country is broken by numerous hill ranges. The See also:chief rivers are the Palar, the See also:South Pinakini or See also:Pennar, the North Pinakini, and the Papagani, which are industriously utilized for See also:irrigation by means of anicuts and tanks. The rocks of the district are mostly See also:syenite or See also:granite, with a small admixture of See also:mica and feldspar.

soil in the valleys consists of a fertile See also:loam; and in the higher levels See also:sand and See also:gravel are found. The hills are covered with scrub, See also:jungle and brushwood. In 1901 the See also:population was 723,600, showing an increase of 22 % in the See also:decade. The district is traversed by the Bangalore See also:line of the See also:Madras railway, with a See also:branch ro m. See also:long, known as the Kolar Goldfields railway. See also:Gold prospecting in this region began in 1876, and the See also:industry is now settled on a secure basis. Here are situated the mines of the Mysore, See also:Champion See also:Reef, Ooregum, and Nandidrug companies. To the end of 1904 the See also:total value of gold produced was 21 millions See also:sterling, and there had been paid in dividends 9 millions, and in See also:royalty to the Mysore state one million. The See also:municipality called the Kolar Gold See also:Fields had in 1901 a population of 38,204; it has suffered severely from See also:plague. See also:Electricity from the falls of the See also:Cauvery (93 M. distant) is utilized as the See also:motive See also:power in the mines. See also:Sugar manufacture and See also:silk and See also:cotton weaving are the other principal industries in the district. The chief See also:historical See also:interest of See also:modern times centres See also:round the hill fort of Nandidrug, which was stormed by the See also:British in 1791, after a See also:bombardment of 21 days.
