KOLOMEA (See also:Polish, Kolomyja) , a See also:town of See also:Austria, in See also:Galicia, 122 M. S. of See also:Lemberg by See also:rail. Pop. (1900), 34,188, of which See also:half were See also:Jews. It is situated on the Pruth, and has an active See also:trade in agricultural products. To the N.E. of Kolomea, near the See also:Dniester, lies the See also:village of Czernelica, with ruins of a strongly fortified See also:castle, which served as the See also:residence of See also:John Sobieski during his See also:campaigns against the See also:Turks. Kolomea is a very old town and is mentioned already in 1240, but the assertion that it was a See also:Roman See also:settlement under the name of Colonia is not proved. It was the See also:principal town of the Polish See also:province of Pokutia, and it suffered severely during the 15th and 16th centuries from the attacks of the Moldavians and the See also:Tatars.
