(1901) 3747. The See also:principal See also:building is St Mel's See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:cathedral for the See also:diocese of Ardagh, one of the finest Roman Catholic churches in Ireland. The town has a considerable See also:trade in See also:grain, See also:butter and See also:bacon. There are See also:corn-See also:mills, a spool factory and tanneries. Longford is governed by an See also:urban See also:district See also:council. The See also:ancient name of the town was Athfada, and here a monastery is said to have been founded by St Idus, a See also:disciple of St See also:Patrick. The town obtained a See also:fair and See also:market from See also:James I. and a See also:charter of See also:incorporation from See also:Charles II., as well as the right to return two members to See also:parliament. It was disfranchised at the See also:Union in 1800.
