Under the See also:French regime, Louisburg was second only to See also:Quebec. A fortress was erected at enormous expense, and the See also:city was the centre of the See also:cod-See also:fisheries. The fortress was, however, captured in 1745 by the See also:American colonists, under See also:Sir See also:William See also:Pepperrell (1696-1759), assisted by the See also:British See also:fleet, and again in 1758 by a British See also:land and See also:sea force under See also:General See also:Jeffrey See also:Amherst (1717-1797) and See also:Admiral See also:Boscawen. The See also:jealousy of the British See also:settlement of See also:Halifax led to its almost utter destruction, and only a few See also:case-mates now remain. Under See also:English See also:rule a fishing See also:village See also:grew up on the other See also:side of the See also:harbour, and has now become the See also:winter See also:shipping port of the Dominion See also:Coal See also:Company. The harbour is deep, spacious and open all the See also:year See also:round, though occasionally blocked by See also:drift See also:ice in the See also:spring.
