Church, but his religious views did not permit him to take See also:holy orders. For some years he lived abroad, first in See also:California and then as a See also:commissioner of See also:Crown-lands in See also:Australia. After his return to See also:England in 1857 he took up an advanced humanitarian position, and claimed to have acquired a new sense by which he was able to discern the spiritual See also:condition of other See also:people. He was associated with Mrs See also:Anna See also:Kingsford (1846-1888), the See also:lady-See also:doctor and supporter of See also:vegetarianism and See also:anti-vivisectionism, who, besides being one of the pioneers of higher See also:education for See also:women, had become a devotee of mystical See also:theosophy; with her he brought out Keys of the See also:Creeds (1875), The Perfect Way: or the Finding of See also:Christ (1882), and founded the Hermetic Society in 1884. After her See also:death he founded the See also:Esoteric See also:Christian See also:Union in 1891, and wrote her See also:Life and Letters (1896). He died on the 2nd of October 1897.

Edward Mailand married Esther Charles Bradley, one of six daaughters of William Bradley, a wealthy early settler from the Monaro in NSW. I think they had a son Charles.
