Estimated See also:gross See also:revenue, £30,100. The military force See also:numbers 28o, men; and there is no See also:tribute. The See also:town Maier Kotla is 30 M. S. of Ludhiana; pop. (19o1), 21,122. The See also:nawab or See also:chief is of Afghan descent; his See also:family originally came from See also:Kabul, and occupied positions of See also:trust in See also:Sirhind under the See also:Mogul emperors. They gradually became See also:independent as the Mogul See also:Empire sank into decay in the course of the 18th See also:century. In See also:General See also:Lake's See also:campaign against See also:Holkar in 1805 the nawab of Maier Kotla sided with the British. After the subjugation and See also:flight of Holkar, the See also:English See also:government succeeded to the See also:power of the See also:Mahrattas in the districts between the Sutlej and the See also:Jumna; and in 1809 its See also:protection was formally extended to Maier Kotla, as to the other Cis-Sutlej states, against the formidable encroachments of Ranjit Singh. In the See also:campaigns of 18o6, 1807 and r8o8 Ranjit Singh had made considerable conquests across the Sutlej; in 18o8 he marched on Maier Kotla and demanded a See also:ransom of £ro,000 from the nawab. This led to the interference of the British, who addressed an ultimatumto Ranjit Singh, declaring the Cis-Sutlej states to be under British protection. Finally the See also:raja of See also:Lahore submitted, and the nawab was reinstated in See also:February 18oq. Owing to the See also:mental incapacity of nawab See also:Ibrahim All See also:Khan, the state was administered in See also:recent years for some See also:time by the chief of Loharu; but his son, Ahmed See also:Ali Khan, was made See also:regent in February 1905.
