MOOT , a See also:

meeting or See also:assembly, in O. Eng. mot, gemot, a word of which " to meet " is a derivative. " Moot " or its alternative See also:form " mote " is the See also:common See also:term for the assemblies of the See also:people of the See also:hundred, See also:burgh, &c., in the See also:history of See also:early See also:English institutions, and especially for the See also:national assembly or See also:council, the Witenagemot. The name survives in " moot See also:hall," the term still given to See also:town-halls and council buildings in some towns in See also:England, as at See also:Aldeburgh. From its meaning of assembly, the word was applied to a debate or discussion, especially of the discussion of a hypothetical See also:case by See also:law students at the Inns of See also:Court. These moots are still carried on at See also:Gray's See also:Inn. As an See also:adjective. " moot " means doubtful, undecided.
