PELAGIUS II ., a native of See also:Rome, but of See also:Gothic descent, was See also:pope from 579 to 590, having been consecrated successor of See also:Benedict I., without the See also:sanction of the See also:emperor, on the 26th of See also:November. To make his apologies for this irregularity he sent See also:Deacon See also:Gregory, who afterwards became Pope Gregory the See also:Great, as his apocrisiarius to See also:Constantinople. In 585 he sought to heal the See also:schism which had subsisted since the See also:time of Pelagius I. in connexion with the Three Chapters, but his efforts were without success. In 588 See also:John, See also:patriarch of Constantinople, by reviving the old and disputed claim to the See also:title of oecumenic patriarch, elicited a vigorous protest from Pelagius; but the decretal which professes to convey the exact words of the document is now known to be false. He died in See also:January 590, and was succeeded by Gregory I.
