PONTYPOOL , a See also:

market See also:town in the See also:northern See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Monmouthshire, See also:England, 8 m. N. of See also:Newport, served by the See also:Great Western, See also:London & See also:North-Western, and See also:Rhymney See also:railways. Pop. of See also:urban See also:district (1901), 6126. It is beautifully situated on an acclivity above the Afon Lwyd, a tributary of the See also:Usk. Its prosperity is due to its situation on the edge of the great See also:coal- and See also:iron-See also:field of Monmouthshire and See also:Glamorganshire. The earliest See also:record of See also:trade in iron is in 1588, but it was See also:developed chiefly in the beginning of the 18th See also:century by the See also:family of Hanbury, the proprietors of Pontypool See also:Park. Pontypool was formerly famed for its japanned goods, invented by See also:Thomas Allwood, a native of See also:Northampton, who settled in the town in the reign of See also:Charles II., but the manufacture has See also:long been transferred elsewhere. The town and neighbourhood contain large forges and iron See also:mills for the manufacture of iron-See also:work and See also:tin-See also:plate. See also:Water communication is afforded with Newport by the Monmouthshire See also:Canal. On the See also:south-See also:east of Pontypool is the urban district of Panteg, including Griffithstown, with a See also:population (1901) of 7484.
